UTC to EST Converter

Eastern Standard Time is 5 hours behind UTC, but only in winter. In summer the Eastern zone runs on daylight time (EDT), 4 hours behind UTC. Enter any UTC time and date and this converter applies the correct offset automatically and labels the result EST or EDT, so you never have to remember when the clocks change.

The result is labeled EST in winter and EDT in summer, automatically.

How to use

  1. Pick the UTC date for the time you are converting.
  2. Enter the UTC time in 24-hour format.
  3. Click Convert to Eastern Time.
  4. Read the result, labeled EST or EDT, with a note if the calendar day changes.

The manual math, with a worked example

Winter: EST = UTC - 5 hours. Take 18:30 UTC in January: 18:30 minus 5:00 = 13:30, which is 1:30 PM EST, same day.

Summer: EDT = UTC - 4 hours. Take 18:30 UTC in July: 18:30 minus 4:00 = 14:30, which is 2:30 PM EDT, same day. The one-hour seasonal shift is the entire source of UTC-to-Eastern confusion, and it is why entering the date matters.

When the calendar day changes

Because Eastern Time trails UTC by 4 to 5 hours, early-morning UTC times land on the previous evening in New York. 02:00 UTC on May 3 is 10:00 PM EDT on May 2. Late-evening UTC times never jump forward a day going west; that only happens converting eastward toward Asia.

If you schedule international meetings from UTC timestamps (common in aviation, server logs, and crypto), always convert the full date and time together, never the time alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EST and EDT?

EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC-5 and applies roughly November through March. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is UTC-4 and applies roughly March through November. They are the same zone in different seasons, one hour apart. This converter labels the result with whichever is correct for your date.

How do I convert UTC to EST manually?

In winter, subtract 5 hours: 18:00 UTC becomes 1:00 PM EST. In summer, subtract 4 hours: 18:00 UTC becomes 2:00 PM EDT. If the subtraction goes negative, add 24 hours and move back one calendar day.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

For conversion purposes, yes. UTC is the precise modern standard and GMT is the older name, but both mean the zero-offset reference time. You can treat them as identical here.

Why does the converter sometimes show the previous day?

Eastern Time is 5 hours behind UTC, so any UTC time from midnight to 4:59 AM converts to the previous evening in Eastern Time. For example, 03:00 UTC is 10:00 PM EST the day before. The tool flags this so you do not schedule on the wrong date.

What is 00:00 UTC (midnight) in EST?

Midnight UTC is 7:00 PM EST on the previous day (or 8:00 PM EDT the previous day in summer). This is the most common case where the calendar day changes.

Does this converter account for daylight saving?

Yes. It uses the official time zone database, so a January time gets the EST offset (UTC-5) and a July time gets the EDT offset (UTC-4) automatically.
