A worked example: how month borrowing works

Suppose you were born on March 15, 1990 and want your age on July 14, 2026. Subtracting years gives 36, and subtracting months gives July minus March, or 4 months. But the days go negative: 14 minus 15 is minus 1.

The calculator borrows one month, which is 30 days in June, turning the day difference into 29 days and reducing the months to 3. The exact result is 36 years, 3 months, and 29 days. This borrowing step is what simple calculators skip, and it is why their answers drift.

Chronological age vs biological age

Chronological age counts time. Biological age estimates how your body is actually aging based on health markers like blood pressure, fitness, and cellular measures. Two people with the same chronological age can have very different biological ages.

For official purposes, only chronological age counts: IDs, school cutoffs, retirement eligibility, and medical dosing schedules all use the calendar. Biological age is a wellness concept, useful for motivation but not for paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed since you were born, measured in years, months, and days. It is the straightforward mathematical age used on official documents. It differs from biological age, which reflects your body's physical condition and can be higher or lower than your chronological age.

How is chronological age calculated?

The calculator subtracts your birth date from today's date using calendar math. When the day or month subtraction would go negative, it borrows from the next unit, exactly like column subtraction, using the real number of days in each month. Leap years are handled automatically, since February has 29 days in leap years.

What if I was born on February 29?

Leap day birthdays are handled correctly. In non-leap years the calculator treats the anniversary using standard calendar rules, and the total day count stays exact because every real calendar day is counted.

Why do schools, doctors, and employers need exact age?

School enrollment cutoffs, pediatric growth charts, vaccination schedules, legal age thresholds, and HR eligibility rules can all hinge on a single day. An age in whole years is not precise enough when a cutoff falls mid-year, which is why years, months, and days matter.

Why not just divide total days by 365.25?

Dividing by 365.25 gives an approximation that can be off by weeks around month boundaries. Calendar-based calculation counts real months and real leap days, so the years, months, and days always add up to the exact date difference.

Is the total days lived count exact?

Yes. It counts every calendar day from your birth date to today, including all leap days. The years, months, and days breakdown and the total day count are two views of the same exact difference.

Do you store my date of birth?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and your birth date is never sent to a server or stored anywhere. Refreshing the page wipes it.
