Cat Age Calculator

Wondering how old your cat is in human years? This free cat age calculator converts cat years to human years using the widely accepted 15/9/4 rule: about 15 human years for the first cat year, 9 more for the second, and roughly 4 for each year after that. Enter your cat's age, decimals like 2.5 work too, and see the human equivalent plus the life stage instantly.

How to use

  1. Enter your cat's age in years. Decimals like 1.5 are fine.
  2. Click Convert to Human Years.
  3. See the equivalent human age instantly.
  4. Check the life stage to understand what care your cat needs now.

Cat life stages and what changes at each one

Kittens (0 to 1 year, up to 15 human years) need calorie-dense food, vaccinations, and lots of play. Junior cats (1 to 2 years, 15 to 24 human years) are young adults: switch to adult food and keep them active.

Prime adults (3 to 6 years, 28 to 40 human years) are in their best years with routine annual checkups. Mature cats (7 to 10 years, 44 to 56 human years) should move to adult maintenance diets and yearly blood work. Seniors (11 to 14 years, 60 to 72 human years) need twice-yearly vet visits and joint-friendly setups like low-entry litter boxes.

Why your cat's human age matters for care

Knowing the human equivalent helps you make better decisions. A 10 year old cat at 56 human years may start benefiting from senior-specific food and more frequent screenings, just like a person in their fifties.

It also reframes behavior. That 6 month old kitten destroying your curtains is developmentally a preteen, full of energy and still learning boundaries. Patience and play beat punishment at every life stage.

Frequently asked questions

How does the cat to human years conversion work?

It uses the 15/9/4 rule. The first year of a cat's life equals about 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more for a total of 24, and each year after that adds about 4 human years. So a 5 year old cat is roughly 36 in human years: 24 plus 3 times 4.

Why is the old 7 years per cat year rule wrong?

Multiplying by 7 is only close for middle-aged cats. It fails badly at both ends: a 1 year old cat is far more developed than a 7 year old human, and a 15 year old cat is not 105. Cats mature extremely fast in their first two years, then age more steadily, which the 15/9/4 rule reflects.

What is 6 months in human years?

About 10 human years. Kittens develop so fast that half a year already equals a preteen. This is why spaying, neutering, and vaccination schedules are measured in weeks and months, not years.

Does breed or indoor vs outdoor life change the result?

The conversion is an estimate, and real aging varies. Indoor cats often live longer and age more slowly than outdoor cats, and breed, weight, diet, and veterinary care all play a role. Use the result as a guide to your cat's life stage, not a medical measurement.

What are the cat life stages?

Kitten from birth to 1 year, junior from 1 to 2, prime adult from 3 to 6, mature from 7 to 10, senior from 11 to 14, and geriatric at 15 and up. Care needs shift at each stage, especially diet and vet checkup frequency.

When is a cat considered senior?

Around 11 years old, roughly 60 in human years. Senior cats benefit from twice-yearly vet checkups, weight monitoring, and diets formulated for older cats. Arthritis, dental disease, and kidney issues become more common, so watch for stiffness, appetite changes, and increased thirst.

I adopted my cat and don't know the age. How can I guess?

Vets estimate age from teeth, coat, eyes, and muscle tone. White clean teeth suggest under a year, some yellowing suggests 1 to 2 years, tartar buildup points to 3 to 5, and worn or missing teeth suggest senior. A vet can give you the most reliable estimate during a checkup.
