Worked example
A $500 item gets an 8% price increase. What is the new price?
Increase amount: $500 x 8/100 = $40. New price: $500 + $40 = $540. Equivalently, $500 x 1.08 = $540 in one step.
Frequently asked questions
How do I increase a number by a percentage?
Multiply the number by (1 + percent/100). To increase 500 by 8%: 500 x 1.08 = 540. The calculator also shows the increase amount itself, which is $40 in this example.
What is the increase amount versus the new value?
The increase amount is just the added portion: number x percent/100. The new value is the original plus that amount. For 500 increased by 8%, the increase amount is 40 and the new value is 540.
Can the percentage be negative?
Yes. A negative percentage acts as a decrease. Entering -20% on 100 gives 80, which is the same as decreasing by 20%.
What happens with percentages over 100%?
The value more than doubles. Increasing 200 by 150% gives 200 x 2.5 = 500, because 150% of 200 is 300 added on top.
Can I use decimals?
Yes, both the number and the percentage accept decimals, so values like 99.95 increased by 7.5% work fine.
How is this different from a percentage change calculator?
This tool adds a percentage to a number to produce a new value. A percentage change calculator compares two existing numbers and reports how far apart they are as a percent. Use this one when you are building the new value yourself.
