Worked example
Suppose you earn $22 per hour, work 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours in a week.
Regular pay is 40 x $22 = $880. Overtime is paid at $22 x 1.5 = $33 per hour, so 5 x $33 = $165. Your weekly gross is $880 + $165 = $1,045. That projects to about $4,528 per month and $54,340 per year before taxes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my weekly paycheck from hours?
Multiply hours worked by your hourly rate. For example, 40 hours at $22 per hour is $880. Then add overtime: overtime hours times your rate times 1.5. Five overtime hours at $22 is 5 x $33 = $165, for a $1,045 weekly total.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Under federal rules, overtime is at least 1.5 times your regular hourly rate for hours beyond 40 in a workweek. Multiply your overtime hours by your rate and by 1.5 to get the overtime portion of your check.
How do I estimate monthly pay from a weekly paycheck?
Multiply your weekly pay by 52 and divide by 12. This accounts for the fact that most months are slightly longer than four weeks. For example, $1,045 per week is about $4,528 per month.
Does this include taxes?
No. This calculator shows gross pay before taxes, Social Security, Medicare and any deductions like health insurance or retirement contributions. Your take-home pay will be lower.
Do unpaid breaks count toward my hours?
No. Only count hours you actually worked. Unpaid meal breaks should be excluded, while paid breaks and rest periods generally count as hours worked.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by 2,080, which is 40 hours times 52 weeks. For example, a $50,000 salary is about $24.04 per hour. Adjust the divisor if you regularly work unpaid weeks off.
What if I am paid biweekly instead of weekly?
Double your weekly gross to estimate a biweekly paycheck. For monthly planning, remember that biweekly pay gives you 26 paychecks a year, including two months with three paychecks.
