GPA to Percentage Calculator
Different schools use different scales, so a GPA number alone does not always travel well. Enter your GPA and scale to get the percentage, or flip it and convert a percentage back to GPA. The calculator supports 4.0, 5.0, and 10.0 scales and shows the formula, so you always know how the number was produced.
How to use
- Choose the direction: GPA to percentage, or percentage to GPA.
- Enter your number.
- Pick the GPA scale your school uses (4.0, 5.0, or 10.0).
- Click Convert for the instant result with the formula shown.
The formulas, for each scale
GPA to percentage: divide by the scale, multiply by 100. On a 4.0 scale: (3.5 / 4) x 100 = 87.5%. On a 5.0 scale: (4.2 / 5) x 100 = 84%. On a 10.0 scale (linear): (8.0 / 10) x 100 = 80%.
Percentage to GPA: divide by 100, multiply by the scale. 87.5% on a 4.0 scale: (87.5 / 100) x 4 = 3.5. 76% on a 10.0 scale: (76 / 100) x 10 = 7.6. Note that some Indian universities use GPA x 9.5 instead of the linear formula for the 10-point scale, so 8.0 becomes 76% either way here, but 9.0 becomes 85.5% under that rule versus 90% linear.
A note on official conversions
No online formula is official. Universities, employers, and credential evaluators like WES each publish their own conversion tables, and they do not all agree. A linear conversion is a reasonable estimate for personal use, but before you submit a converted number on an application, check what the receiving institution asks for.
If a form demands a percentage and your transcript shows only a GPA, many schools will accept the transcript as-is or do the conversion themselves. When in doubt, report the original number and name the scale.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula to convert GPA to percentage?
Divide your GPA by the scale maximum and multiply by 100. On a 4.0 scale: (GPA / 4) x 100. So 3.5 becomes 87.5%. Pick the matching scale first; the divisor is what changes the answer.
Which GPA scale should I select?
Use the scale your school reports on: 4.0 is standard in the US, 5.0 appears in some weighted systems, and 10.0 is common in India. Converting with the wrong scale gives a wrong answer, so check your transcript.
My Indian university uses GPA x 9.5. Is that different?
Many Indian universities convert a 10-point GPA with GPA x 9.5 instead of the linear GPA x 10. Under that rule, 8.0 becomes 76%. This calculator uses the linear method; if your university specifies the 9.5 multiplier, use theirs.
Is the converted percentage official?
It is an estimate, not an official credential. Admissions offices and evaluators use their own tables. Use the calculator for quick comparisons, but submit whatever the institution's own instructions ask for.
How do I convert a percentage back to GPA?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the scale. 87.5% on a 4.0 scale: (87.5 / 100) x 4 = 3.5 GPA. Switch the direction above and the calculator does it for you.
Do all schools convert the same way?
No. Some schools publish their own lookup tables where, say, 90% maps to 4.0 and 85% to 3.7, which differs from the linear math. Always follow your institution's table when one exists.
