Chinese Calendar Calculator
Your Chinese zodiac sign depends on the lunar year you were born in, not January 1. This free Chinese calendar calculator takes your Gregorian birth date and returns your zodiac animal, your element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water) and whether your year is yin or yang. It uses a lookup table of Lunar New Year dates from 1924 to 2044, so January and February birthdays land on the correct animal.
How to use
- Enter your birth date.
- Click Find My Chinese Zodiac.
- Read your animal, element and yin or yang.
- January and February birthdays are matched to the correct lunar year automatically.
How the lookup works
The calculator compares your birth date with the Lunar New Year date for your birth year, using a table covering 1924 to 2044. If your birthday falls on or after Lunar New Year, you take that year's animal. If it falls before, you take the previous lunar year's animal.
Example: Lunar New Year 1990 was January 27. A birthday of January 15, 1990 falls before it, so the animal is the Snake (1989's animal). A birthday of May 15, 1990 falls after it, so the animal is the Horse.
The 12 animals and 5 elements
The animals cycle every 12 years: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Each animal year also carries one of five elements, and each element lasts two years in a row.
So 2024 is a Wood Dragon year, 2025 a Wood Snake year, and 2026 a Fire Horse year. The element comes from the heavenly stems, an older layer of the calendar than the animals.
Frequently asked questions
How is my Chinese zodiac animal determined?
By the Chinese lunar year containing your birth date, which starts on Lunar New Year (between January 21 and February 20), not on January 1. That is why someone born in January 1990 is a Snake, while someone born in May 1990 is a Horse.
Why do January birthdays sometimes show the previous year's animal?
Because the lunar year starts weeks after January 1. If you were born before Lunar New Year in your birth year, you belong to the previous lunar year. This calculator checks your date against a Lunar New Year table from 1924 to 2044 to get it right.
How is the element determined?
The element follows the heavenly stems in a ten-year cycle: two consecutive years share each element in the order Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. For example, 2024 and 2025 are both Wood years, 2026 and 2027 are both Fire years.
What do yin and yang mean for a zodiac year?
It is a simple alternating label: even-numbered lunar years are yang, odd-numbered ones are yin. It comes from the same stem-branch system as the element and completes the traditional year name.
How accurate is this near Lunar New Year?
Very close but not perfect at the boundary. The table uses published Lunar New Year dates, and the calculator flags dates near the changeover. If your birthday falls within a day or two of Lunar New Year, double-check against an authoritative lunar calendar.
What are the 12 animals in order?
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, repeating every 12 years. The sequence comes from the twelve earthly branches of the traditional calendar.
Can this convert an exact lunar calendar date?
No. This tool maps a Gregorian birth date to its zodiac animal, element and yin or yang. It does not convert full lunar month and day dates, which need a complete lunisolar calendar.
